Most of the Vinalhaven images on this website are accompanied by brief explanatory descriptions. Their development began decades ago when my mother, Millie Cheney, first began to catalog them, sometimes writing brief notes on the original slides. Later, after I first presented the images as a slide show in 1989, others who saw them offered additional material.
A few images I wanted more information on I placed in the Vinalhaven hardware store. I sent packets to people I thought might be able to help. Bit by bit, additional data came in. And this descriptive accompaniment remains very much a work in progress. Anyone who sees the images and reads the associated descriptions and finds they have corrections or additions is invited to send them to me by e-mail or telephone.
As needed, I will be updating the descriptions when new material emerges. The images are important for themselves, but verbal description placing them in family, social, and community context and time are also obviously important, too. If you have anything you wish to contribute, I would be pleased to have it to add to the overall presentation.
